Master Carpentry

If you are interested in a career in master carpentry, there is much for you to learn. A master carpenter is a highly trained craftsperson who builds items such as structures and furniture from wood. This career can be lucrative and enjoyable, but also a lot of hard work. This is especially the case for rough carpentry. However if you are in good physical shape, have a reasonable grasp of math principles and enjoy outdoor work carpentry might be the ideal career for you.

There are many different specialties to consider when it comes to working as a carpenter. The little known term 'mayster' is used to describe a carpenter who does rough carpentry. This refers to work such as building framework that does not need to be finely detailed, hence the term rough. The opposite of a mayster is a finish carpenter, who does finish work like detailed cabinetry and other intricate work. A trim carpenter does trim work and may also install cabinets. A cabinetmaker does just what the term suggests, makes cabinets from wood. Roofers are carpenters who specialize in installing and maintaining roof structures.

Once you have an idea about what kind of carpenter you want to be, you need to get the right education. While you don't need to go to college to be a carpenter, you do need training. There are carpentry schools all over the world that can teach you. Trade schools also often provide carpentry training. Before you can become certified as a master carpenter, you will need to complete an apprenticeship with one. During this period you will be known as a journeyman or apprentice. This is the most important part of your training because you get on the job experience.

The apprentice period can vary depending on where you are and what kind of carpentry you're studying. In Germany, it is necessary for carpenters to fulfill a full three year period as an apprentice before being allowed to work as a carpenter. After completing your apprentice study, there may be further study or testing required to achieve master carpentry status. Once you are a master carpenter you can open your own business or even work as an instructor for carpentry students. Eventually you may have your own apprentices and teach them everything you know about the career of carpentry and woodworking.
