Minihobby Woodworking Lathe
One tool you may decide to purchase if you are serious about carpentry is a minihobby woodworking lathe. This is especially the case if you work on fine carpentry projects such as decorative woodworking. Before you decide whether or not a lathe is right for your workshop, it helps to know what this tool does. A lathe is a machine that spins a piece of wood in order to perform certain duties like sanding, drilling or cutting around a rotating axis. A simple example of a lathe is a potters wheel. Lathes can be used to make things like pool sticks, chair legs, baseball bats and other similar items.
A woodworking lathe features a horizontal rail that is adjustable. This is called the tool rest. The tool rest lets you place your shaping tools, which are most often held by hand. After you are done applying the desired design or shape to the item, you can smooth the wood by holding sandpaper against the spinning piece of wood. Some woodworking lathes are designed for making items like plates and bowls. This type of lathe does not have a metal rail.
You may also hear lathe use referred to as woodturning, a common term. The are of woodturning involves crafting items out of wood with the help of a lathe machine. When woodturning, the wood is moving while the item being used to shape or decorate the wood stays still. Chisels, routers and sanders are examples of tools used along with a lathe. Woodturning dates all the way back to BC times which is when the ancient Egyptians used a two-person lathe. The ancient Romans also made use of lathe technology. These days lathes are motorized which makes for much easier work, although the theory behind them is the same.
A minihobby woodworking lathe costs anywhere between $300 and $1000 depending on where you shop and is ideal for anyone who enjoys working with small detailed items. You will be surprised how many different projects can be done with the help of a lathe. There are instructional DVDs that you can get that show you how to make the most of your new equipment. You can purchase woodworking lathes online or at home improvement stores like Lowe's or Home Depot. These items make a handy addition to any wood crafting workshop.
